Mace: "After the severe weather events of 2023, we are now starting to remove homes that have been bought out by the council."

Mace: "These are Category 3 properties and they have been assessed as having an intolerable risk to life.

"There is a number of important steps for buildings to determine, if they can be relocated, as the first option, or deconstructed so we can salvage material for re-use. Or the last option is demolition, where that is the only safe option for the building."

Mace: "An expert panel of our suppliers will be on the ground to deconstruct buildings and work closely with the communities to deliver work in a respectful and empathetic way."

Mike: "Seeing people being torn out of the fabric of community and having to move away is absolutely heart-wrenching."

Mike: "Coming to this critical juncture, the buy-outs or that process and seeing that conclude is an incredible release that you can make plans and move on.

"For other communities, I think when deconstruction comes into their neighbourhoods, embrace it and work with the teams that are doing it."

Mike: "Our experience of the contractors working in Muriwai has been really good."

Mace: "We take any lessons learned in Muriwai to roll out the removal of homes across Auckland. We estimate at least 600 storm-damaged homes will be deconstructed over the next two years. It is important to understand in the future how we use the vacant land that is left behind and it may take sometime to work through that process with communities."
