Our archives include records from all the local authorities which, over the years, joined together to become Auckland Council.

These records represent the corporate memory The accumulated body of data, information, and knowledge created in the course of corporate’s existence. of our councils and their predecessors, documenting their functions and activities. They contain historical information about the region and its people - and are an invaluable research resource.

Our archives also contain council staff records.

All of these records are available for research by the public.

We are currently adding records to our archival collections from the remaining former authorities and predecessors. Visit an archives office to access our records and collections.

Staff appointments and salary records can contain information about former council staff members, such as:

• name
• date of birth
• marital status
• superannuation
• date of appointment
• department
• position held
• salary
• education and qualifications.

Not all staff records are retained and privacy legislation applies to access to these records.

In some cases archives also hold photographs of staff.

Formed in 1989, the Auckland Regional Council took over the functions and responsibilities of the Auckland Regional Authority (ARA), which was established in 1963.

The ARA took over the function of some agencies, such as regional planning and public transport. These agencies transferred their records to the ARA.

The Auckland City Council was established in 1871. Since then, the council's boundaries have expanded and in 1989, 11 local authorities joined together to form Auckland City.

Franklin District Council was formed in 1989 by the amalgamation of Franklin County, Pukekohe Borough, Waiuku Borough and Tuakau Borough, along with the northern portion of the former Raglan County.

Manukau City Council was formed when Manukau County and Manurewa Borough joined together in 1965.

Howick Borough and Papatoetoe City joined Manukau City Council in 1989.

Devonport Borough, Northcote Borough, Takapuna City, East Coast Bays City, Birkenhead City and North Shore Drainage Board joined together in 1989 to form North Shore City Council.

Papakura District Council was formed in 1989 from Papakura City, with the addition of Takanini, Alfriston and Ardmore areas from Manukau City and the Drury and Karaka areas from Franklin County.

Rodney District Council was formed in 1989 by the amalgamation of Helensville Borough and Rodney County Council.

Waitakere City Council was formed in 1989 by the amalgamation of Waitemata City with the boroughs of Henderson, New Lynn and Glen Eden.
