Pest control in maintaining forest biodiversity.
Experiences
Investigate the biological impact of an event on a NZ ecosystem (sci1.12 AS90951).
Students spend the day in the forest investigating the impact of pest control on the podocarp/broadleaf forest at Arataki. Students learn about the role of our native biodiversity in maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem, the impact of introduced mammalian pests and methods of pest control.
Students then collect data on the health of the Arataki forest ecosystem using tracking tunnels, seedling quadrats and bird counts to help students compare and analyse data sets back in the classroom.
