Learn how volcanic activity has shaped Auckland's landscape.
Experience
From lava caves to kumara pits, there's heaps to explore on Māngere Mountain, the only intact volcanic cone in the Manukau area.
Using hands-on, fun experiments, students simulate the various stages of a volcanic eruption and lava flow, and search for signs of human habitation from Māori occupation to the present day. Looking from the trig point, they learn how Manukau Harbour was the food basket for local Māori before heading down to Te Pane o Mataoho to explore the crater.
Students continue on to Ambury Park to explore more volcanic features (lava flows and caves) and learn how we minimise volcanic risks and monitor volcanic activity with the help of seismographs.
