Experiences
Using scientific Wai Care equipment they will investigate the health of a stream in the Waitākere Ranges. Stream sites may include Little Huia or Karamatura Valley.
The location will be confirmed at booking.
Types of testing
Abiotic tests include taking stream observations and testing:
- temperature
- clarity
- dissolved oxygen
- pH
- nitrates/nitrites
- phosphates.
Biotic tests include identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates as bio-indicators of stream health.
Students can borrow a Wai Care testing kit to investigate the biological impact of an urbanisation on freshwater stream ecosystems.
