We installed permanent community water sites in rural Auckland in 2021 to help rural communities get through drought conditions.

Why we installed community water sites
Climate change can mean more severe weather conditions, both wetter winters and drier summers.
When drought conditions hit, rural communities face dry rainwater tanks and unreasonable water delivery wait times.
Our community water bollards give rural communities access to clean drinking water throughout the drier months.
How the community water sites work
During normal conditions Aucklanders can use the water bollards as normal drinking fountains.
When there is no predicted rainfall and a long wait for water deliveries, we will attach hoses to the sides of these fountains to make water collection sites for the community.
You can then collect 20 litres per person per day for each household.
We will advertise when you are able to fill up.

How to locate a water bollard
Signs at the sites will show you where to go.
Each bollard is coloured blue and stands about a metre high, with a tap on top (pictured). When the sites are active for water collection, two short hoses will be attached.

Water quality and health information
All our operating water fountains and community water sites will have clean drinking water available. The water will always be treated to current drinking water standards.
Keeping your water clean
To ensure the water you collect stays safe to drink, make sure your containers are clean.
See Health New Zealand for more information on:
- how to clean your containers
- how to keep the water safe for drinking

Shower facilities
During a drought, many of our pools and leisure centres, parks and holiday parks will be open for residents to access shower facilities.
These facilities will be advertised alongside the opening of the community water sites.
