We recognise Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi as New Zealand’s founding document. Our relationship with and responsibilities to Māori are grounded by this and guided by relevant law.

To enable Māori to work with us, we are committed to fostering the development of Māori capacity to contribute to our decision-making.

We provide opportunities for Māori to contribute to our decision-making processes, placing particular importance on our partnership relationship with the 19 mana whenua authorities of Tāmaki Makaurau.

We recognise the enduring presence, aspirations and cultural obligations of mana whenua as kaitiaki (stewards) in Tāmaki Makaurau and we will always take this into account in decisions related to:

• ancestral land, water, sites, and waahi tapu
• valued flora and fauna
• other taonga.

The importance of our relationships with the Māori community

Our relationships with the wider Māori community are important in planning for social, economic, and cultural activities and outcomes.
