Te Rimutahi provides a much-needed public space in central Ponsonby. We have transformed the site at 254 Ponsonby Road into an area where you can connect, relax and play.
About Te Rimutahi
Features of the space

An accessible pathway connects the space with Ponsonby Road and O'Neill Street.
How the design supports sustainability
The design of the space supports our goal of reducing Auckland’s carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.
We have:
- installed a refurbished toilet block removed from Bledisloe Place when City Rail Link construction began
- repurposed parts of the original buildings like the steel frames, concrete floors and walls
- kept existing and planted new trees to expand the urban forest Auckland’s urban ngahere (forest) is defined as the network of all trees, other vegetation and green roofs – both native and naturalised – in existing and future urban areas. and restore biodiversity in the area
- planted gardens to increase permeable Natural ground surfaces, including grass and soil, which allow water to pass through and soak into the ground, reducing the volume of run-off flowing over the ground. areas and reduce stormwater runoff
- used low energy LED lighting throughout the site
- installed solar panels on the canopy roof to generate electricity.
