This is the Māori name for the native Nestegis spp. It is a native tree with one of the hardest timbers traditionally used for war implements, walking sticks and root pounders.

A bold and committed person may be compared to the maire tree in the Māori whakataukī (saying) E, ko te matakahi maire (Like a wedge of maire).

When returning Māori names to the whenua (land), kaumātua (local iwi elders) of Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara drew on the oral history of the maunga (mountains), awa (rivers), ngahere (forests) and manu (bird life) that existed prior to European settlement.

They wish to recognise those rākau (plants/trees) that make up Tāne Mahuta (the forest realm) by placing these names across the whenua, and reflecting what was once so predominant in this area.

Located within the valley this playground provides equipment for young and old. Equipment includes slides, wobbly bridges, climbing and balancing items and a rotating climbing net. Concrete footpaths loop through this park and are attractive for bikes, scooters and trikes. This playground is best accessed from Killygordon Place.
