Ōtuataua Stonefields is a 100-hectare site of significance to mana whenua. It was established to protect and preserve the archaeological remains of the communities which thrived on this land for hundreds of years.
This reserve is wāhi tapu (a sacred place) and Tangata Whenua have requested that food is not consumed on the reserve. However, water bottles are welcome.
As you walk through Ōtuataua Stonefields you can see the stone and earthworks, demonstrating how people once lived and worked. Māori farmers used warm volcanic stones in the soil to extend the growing season for tropical crops such as taro and kūmara. Later, Europeans used the stones to build fencing for their farms. You will also have scenic views of the Manukau Harbour.
South of the entrance at Ihumātao Quarry Road is a public avocado orchard – visit the Aucklife website for picking limits and more information.
Access is from Ihumātao Quarry and Oruarangi roads. You will need to park on the road.
Follow the Ōtuataua Stonefields Path to learn more about the area and enjoy the views.
