One of Auckland region's 14 Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains).
Mount St John is a volcanic scoria cone with a single crater approximately 125 metres wide and 20 metres deep. The remains of Māori occupation of the mountain provide an element of historic and archaeological interest.
This domain is under pasture. It has a variety of native and introduced trees growing in the crater and on the slopes of the cone.
Local residents use the domain for informal recreational activities such as walking and jogging. Local schools and community youth groups also use it for outdoor educational activities.
Access from Market Road, Mount St John Avenue and Belvedere Street. The paths up the domain are steep and there are a few sections with steps and gates. The main entrance gates are open from 7am to 8.30pm in summer, and 7am to 7pm in winter.
You will need to park on the road. Check signs carefully as there are parking restrictions in the area.
