About Mahurangi East Regional Park, Scott Point

Mahurangi East Regional Park offers sheltered bays, native bush, open pasture and historic sites. You can enjoy this favourite stop for boaties all year round.

The park is divided into two areas - Mahurangi East - Scott Point and Mahurangi East - Sadler Point.

You need to know

Animals

Dogs, other animals and pets are prohibited at all Auckland Council regional parks' bookable sites and accommodation. The exception is registered aid dogs. You will need to advise our staff at time of booking if you have a registered aid dog for an exemption.
Dogs are allowed in regional parks only as stated in the dog walking section. All other animals are prohibited at all times, unless you have a permit issued by Auckland Council.

Alcohol

Visible and excessive consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
We may ask you and your group to leave the park and terminate your permit.

Smokefree regional parks

Our regional parks are smoke-free.
Please observe this while staying on or using our regional parks.

Waste

All our regional parks are rubbish free. Take all rubbish and recycling with you when you leave.

Outdoor fires

It is illegal to light a fire outside in all public areas in the Auckland region.

Mobility access

Much of Mahurangi is unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

Mountain buggy access

Scott Point board walk is great for buggies; however, there are two short sections where you may need to carry the pram over the sand.

Potable water

There is no public water supply or tap stand at Scott Point.

Mobile phone coverage

Poor in general, but there are patches of coverage in various locations.

Scott Homestead

Available for daytime use only from 8am - 10pm. The grounds around the homestead are included when hiring. Note: Animals (except aid dogs) are prohibited at all times.

Native bush

Scarlet flowering pōhutukawa are spectacular at Scott Point in summer.

Music

No amplified music is allowed. This includes bluetooth speakers and amps.

Activities at Mahurangi East Regional Park, Scott Point

Drones

See Flying drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to obtain rules, guidelines, and our code of conduct for flying UAVs and drones.

Fishing

Land based fishing enthusiasts can try for kahawai and snapper from the rocky outcrops of Mahurangi. Extreme care is required from an incoming tide. Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) regulations apply.

Bird watching

There is plenty here for the bird enthusiasts. See bird watching for information about what you can see and where.

Walking

At low tide you can walk across to the Maunganui (Casnell Island) Department of Conservation Reserve.

Mountain biking

Mountain biking is permitted on open farmland and all tracks, unless otherwise indicated. However, the area isn’t considered mountain bike friendly with most tracks crossing farm paddocks and many closed gates.

Diving

Scuba diving sites are limited due to the shallow tidal nature of the harbour. The best sites are accessible by boat only.

Good snorkelling opportunities exist around the rocky outcrops of each of the parks' bays.

Picnics

Scott Homestead and grounds are available to hire for small groups and family events.

Kayaking

For the more experienced kayaker, Mahurangi is a good base to explore Kawau Bay including popular destinations such as Motoroa Island.

Weddings

Apply for a permit to have an event or wedding in a regional park or call 09 301 0101 and ask to speak to a Senior Park Ranger.

Surfing

Wind surfing is permitted at Mahurangi so long as it does not disturb other park visitors. Care must be taken when there are other swimmers in the water. No vessels are to be used within the life guard flags.
