About Te Muri Regional Park

Te Muri Regional Park offers large recreational opportunities amongst a mix of coastal forest fragments, beautiful coastlines and farm land.

Access to this park is by boat or foot only from Mahurangi Regional Park (West). You can park at the top car park and walk from there. You will need to join the Cudlip Point Loop Track (red markers) and walk south down the farm track to Te Muri Estuary. You can cross the estuary two hours either side of low tide only.

Mahurangi West Regional Park is across Te Muri Stream to the north and Wenderholm Regional Park is across the Puhoi River to the south. These three parks form a large area of park land at the entrance to the Mahurangi Harbour.

Animals

Dogs, other animals and pets are prohibited at all Auckland Council regional parks' bookable sites and accommodation. The exception is registered aid dogs. You will need to advise our staff at time of booking if you have a registered aid dog for an exemption.
Dogs are allowed in regional parks only as stated in the dog walking section. All other animals are prohibited at all times, unless you have a permit issued by Auckland Council.

Alcohol

Visible and excessive consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
We may ask you and your group to leave the park and terminate your permit.

Smokefree regional parks

Our regional parks are smoke-free.
Please observe this while staying on or using our regional parks.

Waste

All our regional parks are rubbish free. Take all rubbish and recycling with you when you leave.

Outdoor fires

It is illegal to light a fire outside in all public areas in the Auckland region.

Facilities at Te Muri Regional Park

Pedestrian access

Open 24 hours. Pedestrian access is via Mahurangi West Regional Park only and is tide dependent - cross the estuary two hours either side of low tide.. No public access from Hungry Creek Road.

Mobility access

Access to Te Muri Regional Park is tide dependant and not suitable for those with limited mobility.

Vehicle access

There is no vehicle access. Parking is available at Mahurangi West Regional Park.

Gate access winter

6am to 7pm (Non daylight savings). The gated area does not include the top car park at Mahurangi West Regional Park.

Gate access summer

6am to 9pm (Daylight savings). The gated area does not include the top car park at Mahurangi West Regional Park.

Unsealed access road

One short section (400m) of Ngarewa Drive is unsealed.

Parking

Parking is at the top car park at Mahurangi West Regional Park before you enter into Sullivans Bay - 25 spaces available. There is a 5min walk to the Te Muri estuary stream crossing.

Toilets

Two toilets at Te Muri Beach campground, and in the main arrival area at Sullivans Bay in Mahurangi West Regional Park.

Limited mobility toilet

There is a limited mobility cubicle at the Sullivan’s Bay main toilet block. Access is from across the sealed road and path.

Picnic sites

There are no designated picnic sites, but feel free to find your own spot and bring your own gas barbecue.

Mobile phone coverage

Poor in general, but there are patches of coverage in various locations.

Native bush

Patches of mature coastal forest can be seen on the Te Muri headland and valleys. Kānuka, taraire, pūriri, karaka and kōwhai are present. Scarlet flowering pōhutukawa are spectacular in the summer.

Water supply

Drinking water is from a treated bore supply and is safe to drink. Taps are at the Te Muri Beach campground.

Music

No amplified music is allowed. This includes bluetooth speakers and amps.

Purple Loop Track

3 hours, 4.6km
Not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Time and distance does not include walking over from Mahurangi West Regional Park and crossing the Te Muri Estuary.

Orange Loop Track

2 hours, 4km
Not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Time and distance does not include walking over from Mahurangi West Regional Park and crossing the Te Muri Estuary.

Activities at Te Muri Regional Park

Drones

Drones cannot be flown in regional parks without a permit.
Visit Flying drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to find out the rules, guidelines and our code of conduct for flying UAVs and drones.

Picnics

You may bring your own gas barbecue.

Mountain biking

Mountain biking is allowed on open farm land and all tracks, unless otherwise indicated. However, the area isn’t considered mountain bike friendly with most tracks crossing farm paddocks and many closed gates.

Farm animals viewing

Te Muri is a working farm so you may meet cattle, calves, sheep and lambs during your visit. Feel free to wander through the paddocks containing farm animals. Avoid walking between young stock and their mums. You must follow all safety signs and respect restricted areas. Please leave gates as you find them.

Volunteering

Volunteer tasks may include tree planting, track maintenance, mulching, and pest management. You can also enjoy a free and extended stay as a camp host- call 09 301 0101 and ask to speak to the northern regional parks office for details.

Orienteering

The orienteering course offers a fun way to explore Mahurangi and Te Muri. There are 20 markers spread over the park.

Sightseeing

Enjoy stunning views that take in the Hauraki Gulf Islands and Mahurangi Harbour. There are several great vantage points from the walking tracks.

Kayaking

Enjoy a short paddle from Te Muri Beach to Sullivan’s Bay or Wenderholm Regional Park. For the more experienced kayaker, Mahurangi is a good base to explore Kawau Bay including popular destinations such as Motuora Island (DoC managed).

Weddings

You may need a permit to hold a wedding or civil union ceremony at this regional park. Visit Apply for a permit to have an event or wedding in a regional park for more information, or call 09 301 0101 and ask to speak to a Senior Park Ranger.

Bird watching

There is plenty here for the bird enthusiasts. Visit bird watching for information about what you can see and where.

Swimming

Te Muri beach is great for swimming in all tides.

Fishing

Land based fishing enthusiasts can try for kahawai and snapper from the rocky outcrops of Cudlip and Te Muri headlands. Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) regulations apply.

Camping - back country

There is one back country campground - Te Muri Beach. It is at the southern end of Te Muri Beach. Accessible by foot (tidal dependant) or boat only and is a great spot for swimming, water sports, walking and exploring.

Walking

We are developing walking opportunities around Te Muri Regional Park. Please use marked walking tracks only and stay out of sections of the park that are closed.

Diving

Scuba diving sites are limited due to the shallow tidal nature of the harbour. The best sites are accessible by boat only.
There are good snorkelling opportunities around the rocky outcrops at the south end of Te Muri Beach.
