The maps on this page show places where freedom camping is not allowed on Aotea / Great Barrier Island under the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw 2022.
This does not mean that freedom camping is allowed anywhere not shown.
In addition to the bylaw rules for the areas on Great Barrier Island shown below, you also cannot freedom camp:
- at council reserves (parkland held under the Reserves Act), unless we set aside areas for this in future
- in regional parks
- in car parks where parking is reserved, and/or a fee is charged to park (such as council parking buildings).
General rules apply to freedom camping in other areas on Great Barrier Island.
If you’re not sure, look for signage in the area.
Prohibited areas on Aotea / Great Barrier Island
Freedom camping is banned in the following areas. This does not mean freedom camping is allowed anywhere not shown.
Blind Bay (parking area by wharf)
Opposite 670 Blind Bay Road, Great Barrier Island

Gooseberry Flat

Medlands carpark

Old Service Centre building and surrounds
