Information on the maps
The maps on this page show places where freedom camping is not allowed in the Waitākere Ranges under the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw 2022.
This does not mean that freedom camping is allowed anywhere not shown.
In addition to the bylaw rules for the areas at the Waitākere Ranges shown below, you also cannot freedom camp:
- at council reserves (parkland held under the Reserves Act), unless we set aside areas for this in future
- in regional parks
- in car parks where parking is reserved, and/or a fee is charged to park (such as council parking buildings).
General rules apply to freedom camping in other areas in at the Waitākere Ranges.
If you’re not sure, look for signage in the area.
Prohibited areas at the Waitākere Ranges
Freedom camping is banned in the following areas. This does not mean freedom camping is allowed anywhere not shown.
