You will need to arrange a more detailed assessment with suitably qualified experts after we issue a placard for your property:

• A Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) and/or a structural engineer need to assess the building for any structural issues.
• A geotechnical engineer can advise on land issues, for example where a slip has occurred.

This assessment will help you understand what you need to do to repair your property or make it safe.

If you are insured, contact your insurance provider to discuss damage to your property. Talk to your insurer early to make sure they understand your situation.

They will advise the process for insurance assessment and repairs.

They will also tell you which building professionals they plan to use, or they will give you approval to use professionals of your choice.

You may need to get a building or resource consent before you undertake work. Use our Do I need a consent tool to work out if you need a consent.

If your insurer is not managing your repairs, or if you do not have insurance, you will need to organise qualified professionals to manage necessary repairs.

Your insurer might arrange for a suitably qualified expert to assess and report on the damage to your property as part of your claim.

Your insurer uses these reports to help decide your entitlements and to settle your claims, including land cover and claims from Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake. Your insurer will manage this.

These reports are for insurance purposes. They might not report on building safety or the risk of injury to people.

Though they might share details about the hazard and repair work, these reports might not be enough for us to change or remove your property's placard.

For a placard to be changed or removed, you will need to provide evidence that you have completed repairs or made the property safe.

Send us documentation and photos to show your property is safe at rbacomms@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz after the repairs are complete.

We will review your documentation and placard status and decide if we need to visit your property again. A visit from our inspectors is not always required.

We will send you an email notification and updated letter with a change of placard status for your address, if appropriate.

• a dangerous or at-risk property that needs assessment
• changes that could result in danger to occupants and properties, such as further slips occurring.

Your online appointment will be with a geotechnical specialist who can advise on detailed assessments and design.
