About Symonds Street Cemetery East

The Symonds Street Cemetery is one of New Zealand’s oldest urban cemeteries. It was established in 1841, and was Auckland’s main burial ground until 1886, when Waikumete Cemetery was opened. The eastern part of the cemetery, located on the Grafton Gully side of Symonds Street, contains:

  • the Anglican cemetery
  • the Wesleyan cemetery
  • the general cemetery.

As the cemetery is a significant heritage site, there are some restrictions around monument conservation. To learn more, see the Monuments and headstones page.

Access from Symonds Street and St Martin's Lane. You will need to park on the road.

Accessible toilets and seating are inside the cemetery.
