Starts at 20 Council Terrace, Northcote Point
Start in Northcote Point at Wai Manawa / Little Shoal Bay Reserve. The large, flat reserve is a great seaside spot to relax and enjoy close-up views of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
If you’re planning to swim, check the water conditions on the Safeswim website before you go - you can only swim when it’s high tide.
There is an off-leash dog exercise area (check on-site signage) at the popular reserve, but make sure dogs are on-leash in Le Roys Bush and on the sports field. Dogs are prohibited from being on or near the playground at all times.
Cross Council Terrace and follow the signs to enter Wai Manawa / Le Roys Bush Reserve. This bush reserve has a waterfall and native birdlife, as well as huge kauri, tōtara and nīkau palms.
Follow the track along the wetland, valley and stream. The path is a mix of gravel tracks and boardwalks (narrow in areas), with some steps.
The bushwalk emerges at 251 Hinemoa Street. Opposite is the iconic Birkenhead Library and Civic Centre building. Check out what's on offer, and admire the sweeping sea views from the balcony.
Spend some time enjoying the local shops and cafes in Birkenhead village. Don't miss the viewing platform Kaimataara ō Wai Manawa (located on Birkenhead Avenue), with panoramic views of Wai Manawa / Le Roys Bush Reserve, Auckland city and Rangitoto Island.
